Dr. Jennifer Chan is NetHope’s Crisis Informatics program advisor and previously helped launch the design, implementation, and execution of the Crisis Informatics program. During NetHope’s work during the West Africa Ebola crisis, Vanuatu Cyclone, Nepal Earthquake, and early stages of the Syria Refugee response she served as the operational coordinator for informatics efforts assessing user needs, managing volunteer technical experts, developing data sharing strategies and guiding the diffusion of information products to field operational staff.
She currently advises and provide strategic support to the Crisis Informatics program team. Her current support includes assisting with strategic planning, business plan development and advising NetHope staff on data, humanitarian information management issues.
She currently supports humanitarian NGOs and UN agencies in the sector of humanitarian information management and crisis informatics. She was the co-author of Disaster 2.0. In addition to her work in informatics, Jennifer has deployed as a first responder to the 2010 Haiti Earthquake, Ethiopian Guj-Borena conflict, Hurricane Katrina, and Mozambique Floods. Her training, evaluation and funded research explore the impact of ICT in disasters. Dr. Chan is also a practicing emergency physician in Chicago and has academic positions and affiliations at Northwestern University and the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative.
